 PHILATELIC LITERATURE

AUGUST 2019

Welcome to our website here at Elstree Stamps. We have been GB dealers for over 20 years, and specialize in material from Queen Victoria. From Postal History, Line Engraved issues including the 1840 1d Black, 1840 2d Blue, 1841 1d Red, and 1841 2d Blue, to Embossed and Surface printed stamps, with a special interest and stock in the 1887 Jubilee issue.
We also keep in stock a selection of material from 1900, and can source many of the more popular later issues, high values, definitive sets etc. if required at competitive prices.

Do please ask for scans of the backs of any items of interest.

All stamps are unmounted mint, hinged in the margin. As far as we are aware, this is the first on offer for over 20 years.

Getting bored or having trouble of filling those spaces in your Windsor album? Well here is an idea for a new area to collect - GB stamps used abroad.
From the mid 19th century, before Commonwealth countries had their own stamps printed with their countries name on them, stamps of Great Britain printed here in England were sent to the "colonies" to be used for postage, and each country had it's own hand stamps. Eg A25 for Malta, A26 for Gibraltar.
Click on any of the examples above to see more from this nice collection we are selling.

1870 SG48 1/2d ROSE RED SCARCE PLATE 9 SUPERB LOOKING CDS CLEAR PROFILE (DR)
Cancelled by a small part CDS high to the right leaving the profile and largest part of the stamp clear.
Clear plate numbers and good perforations.    Off centre as they so often are, however one of the nicest examples we have had on over 20 years. SG Cat 850.00
Order: 14591 - 475.00

1858/79 SG43 1d ROSE RED PLATE 107 UNUSED CORNER BLOCK OF 4 MARGINAL INSCRIPTIONS
Original gum, the left pair appear unmounted mint, the right pair have small hinges to reinforce.  From the top left "first off the sheet" position, from the more difficult plate 107 in circle, and stock number 117. Inscription "PRICE 1d Per Label. 1/- Per Row of 12. 1.... Per S"
Margin showing full deckled edge - a rare positional piece.
Order:15173 - 495.00

1840 SG4 2d DEEP BLUE PLATE 2 LOWER MARGINAL PAIR WITH INSCRIPTION VERY RARE TI/TJ
In the most incredible deep blue shade, cancelled by black Maltese crosses,  this stunning looking pair from the bottom of the sheet,
shows tiny part inscription in lower margins.  4 clear margins all round, the hint of a small repair perhaps top centre? A stunning looking piece.
Order:15170 - 895.00

1840 SG5 2d BLUE PLATE 1 RARE STRIP OF 4 SCOTTISH MALTESE CROSSES VARIETY HE/HH
Possibly in the "steel blue" shade, each stamp is neatly cancelled by an Edinburgh Maltese cross.
Note each strike has a gap in the outer ring on the left side - unusual.
Each stamp clearly has a fault, either marginal or a bend through at the bottom, running down the right side of HF - probably from filing fold.
Despite faults a rare item, and priced accordingly but open to sensible offers. SG Cat 4000.00 as 2 pairs.
Order: 15123 - 795.00

1840 SG5 2d BLUE PLATE 1 RED CROSS ON COVER LONDON TO OLD RAINE SCOTLAND (OI)
A pretty 3 margin example, tied to entire by a red Maltese cross to entire. To William Leslie of Warthill
 - N.B. - Northern Borders - or Scotland as we now call it! Interesting content with discussions of China - Leslie was a partner of Dent & Company in China.

There is a hinge in the top left margin, and a thin in the lower right corner in the margin only.
There may have been a vertical fold between stamp 1/2. From pane "B/F" probably from the right side of the right sheet.
Probably the scarcest of the margin settings on this value. A rare item, especially in this deep shade.
Order: 15097 - 995.00
