Welcome to our website here at Elstree Stamps. We have been GB dealers for over 20 years, and specialize in material from Queen Victoria. From Postal History, Line Engraved issues including the 1840 1d Black, 1840 2d Blue, 1841 1d Red, and 1841 2d Blue, to Embossed and Surface printed stamps, with a special interest and stock in the 1887 Jubilee issue.

1840 SG2 1d Black plate 9 Rare Plymouth Special Maltese Cross (TJ)
A 4 large margin example, cancelled by a good central strike of the Plymouth Maltese cross. With A Jackson certificate of philatelic opinion.
The stamp does have some very minor damage as Jackson notes. Spec AS56uc. SG Cat 3800.00

1841 SG8 1d RED BROWN PLATE 87 SUPERB MINT STRIP OF 3 (OA/OC)
From the left side of the sheet, with inscription in margin "1d Per Label. 1/- Pe"
this very fresh strip has full original gum on the back, touched due to adhesion, but no sign it has been hinged. Clear to large margins around, scarce so fine. SG Cat 1800.00 as singles.

1841 SG8 1d RED BROWN PLATE 131 SUPERB MINT MARGINAL PAIR (CA/CB)
From the left of the sheet, with large part original gum,
hinge mark across top and possibly some redistribution.
On blued paper with part ivory head. Scarce so fine. SG Cat 1200.00 as singles.

1840 SG3 1d GREYISH BLACK PLATE 11 VARIETY (SH)
A very fine used example of this scarce plate, neatly cancelled by a central Black Maltese cross. 7 o'clock ray flaw in NE star, listed variety - small mark of re-entry in left of NE square. Gibbons describes it as a roller flaw,
present in all stamps from this row. Spec AS72c. SG Cat 6000.00

Watermark Emblems. A superbly re-gummed very fresh example of this stamp,
no sign of a hinge. Lovely original colour. SG Cat 4000.00

1867 SG112 10d RED BROWN WATERMARK SPRAY UNUSED INVERTED RARE (DD)
A superb unused but very well re-gummed wing margin example of this very rare stamp. Barely a sign of a hinge, very fresh.

Watermark Crown. A very fine and fresh unmounted mint example of this stamp in a lovely original shade.The gum is slightly toned as these usually are, but scare nonetheless and priced accordingly. SG Cat 1600.00 as hinged.

IMPOSSIBLE LETTERING ON PIECE (PM)

A fine used example of this scarce forgery, letter "M" did not exist on the sheet.
On part of the original telegraph form. SG Cat 1500.00

1852 ALPHABET II 1d RED BROWN PLATE 175 MANCHESTER SPOON RARE & SUPERB ITEM (FG)  
Spoon cancellations on imperf 1d reds are rare as they were used from 1853,  very close to the change over to to perforated 1d stars in 1854. 
To find one so fine on this scarce plate 175 is rare indeed. An exhibition quality item. SG Cat 1000.00 as a normal fine used.

1852 1d RED BROWN RARE PLATE 176 LONDON CANCEL MARGINAL (QA)  
Alphabet II. From the left side of the sheet with part side margin, this is a good used but very pretty example of this rare plate, just touched at upper right, a small hinge added to secure. Neatly struck by a London District "73" in circle cancellation. SG Cat 2900.00

1924 BLOCK CYPHER SG425 5d BROWN RARE CONTROL U34 UNMOUNTED MINT (CONTROL) PAIR   
Imperf. From the Waterlow printing, Comb head B. The control stamp is unmounted mint, the left stamp hinged at the top.

1870 SG48 1/2d ROSE RED PLATE 3 RARE YORK SPOON CANCEL 2nd RE CUT ON PIECE (DC)
From the cancellation dated July 18th 1871 - this is the rare R2 re-cut.  Earliest known Nov 1870 - latest known January 1873. It's value on cover is around 200.00

 1870 SG48 1/2d ROSE RED SCARCE PLATE 9 SUPERB LOOKING CDS CLEAR PROFILE (DR)
Cancelled by a small part CDS high to the right leaving the profile and largest part of the stamp clear. 
Clear plate numbers and good perforations.    Off centre as they so often are, however one of the nicest examples we have had on over 20 years. SG Cat 850.00

 1841 SG7 1d RED BROWN - BLACK PLATE 9 LARGE SHEET MARGINAL FULL CROSS (BL) 
Only just about touching NW corner, otherwise a lovely example from the right of the sheet with large part sheet margin. Cancelled by a full Maltese cross, leaving part of the profile clear.  
A very scarce positional piece, especially on a black plate. Spec AS57

1841 SG7 1d RED BROWN - BLACK PLATE 10 SUPERB USED ENORMOUS MARGINS (PF)   A superb used 4 enormous margin example, perfectly struck by a full central Maltese cross. Part 4 stamps around. Stage 2 "O" flaw. On thin paper.

 1841 SG7 1d RED BROWN - BLACK PLATE 1b VERY RARE STRIP OF 4 (GA/GD)   
Lower margin of GA cut into, otherwise margins all round. Each cancelled by a Maltese cross. Very rare in multiples,
as a block of 4, they are unpriced in Gibbons, multiples are rare on this plate. All showing 10 & 7 o'clock ray flaws. GA & GC shows non - coincident re-entry.

1887 SG205a 4d DEEP GREEN & PURPLE BROWN RARE PANE FROM 4th SETTING
A fine unmounted mint pane from position "C/G" on the sheet, from the 4th marginal setting with 35 horizontal lines around the edge of the sheet.
Two stamps are lightly hinged, hinge marks in the top margin. Very fresh.
Full panes from this setting are rare.

1887 JUBILEE SG199 GREEN & SCARLET RARE UNMOUNTED MINT BLOCK OF 6
A very fine unmounted mint marginal block of 6 from the 3rd setting, with continuous green and broken scarlet lines in the margin.
Three of the stamps have a very light gum bend, all have fresh original gum. Brandon cert as a block of 6,
photocopy of Royal cert when a block of 21 from which this has been taken.
SG Cat 3300.00 as singles - very rare as a multiple of this size. Spec K30(1)

1902 DLR SGO86 (MO25) 21/2d ULTRAMARINE OFFICIAL OVERPRINT
BOARD OF EDUCATION MINT HINGED RPS CERT   

A fine mint lightly hinged example, with original gum. Overprint Type 7. Well centered, good colour. with new RPS cert  which unnecessarily, 
as they often do, comments - surface dirt? Plus Wenvoe cert which states no faults. A very scarce stamp. SG Cat 4850.00 
Note - a similar one sold at a London auction in June 2017 for 2875.00!

 1852 ALPHABET II SG8 1d RED BROWN PLATE 173 SHREWSBURY SPOON ON COVER RARE (LC)
 A large 4 margin example tied by a light strike of a Shrewsbury spoon cancellation to a folded lettersheet so Ludlow. 
Ludlow receiving on the reverse for April 25th 1854. A rare cancellation on an imperforated red.

1841 SG7 1d RED BROWN - BLACK PLATE 1b ON VERY RARE EARLY ISLE OF MAN COVER (KB)      
Margin only just touched on the left side, however, a plate 1b tied to entire by an Isle of Man Maltese cross. June 1st 1841 from Douglas to Liverpool. 
 1d Reds were first sent to the island in the spring of 1841. This cover is therefore very early.
The contents demonstrate the unreliability of the twice weekly "Summer Mail Service".
10 & 7 o'clock ray flaws, horizontal line top of "B" in square. Spec AS6.
Lightest of filing folds through stamp, but a very rare cover. SG Cat 650.00 ++

 1887 JUBILEE SG200 2d GREY GREEN AND VERY DEEP CARMINE UNMOUNTED MINT BLOCK OF 6   
A very fine unmounted mint - mint never hinged - block of 6 with full original gum.  This very deep shade of carmine on the duty plate bleeds through to the back.  One pulled perf. The scan does not do justice to the shade.

1852 SG8 1d RED BROWN ALPHABET II RARE PLATE 176 SUPERB USED (NC) A superb used 4 large margin example, lightly struck by a London Inland cancellation. One of the finest we have handled in over 20 years. Plating has been verified by 2 specialists. For accuracy, it has the very lightest of corner bends which barely detracts from this exhibition quality item. SG Cat 2900.00 as fine used.

  1841 SG8 1d RED BROWN PLATE 100 SUPERB STRIP OF 3 LONDON CDS/DUPLEX CANCELS. A superb used 4 large margin strip of 3, struck late by London District Duplex cancellations for November 29th 1853. NW corner very slightly weak, does not detract from this superb exhibition quality item.

   1900 SG213 1/2d Dull blue green unmounted mint lower right corner marginal vertical pair showing a dramatic pre-printing paper fold. From the vertical comb perforator with perforations in the right margin. A rare item.

 1887  SG201 21/2d Purple on Blue. A very fine unmounted mint example from the 1st setting from the top of the pane showing unusual printing void. Very unusual and probably unique. Ex. Gwaine Baillie Collection.

 1887 SG197 1/2d Vermilion Partially Imperforate. An unmounted mint example without perforations on 3 sides and an extra perforation hole on the perforated side. Only other similar example we have seen was in the Gwaine Baillie collection 2005. Most unusual.

 1887 SG197 1/2d Vermilion. An unmounted Mint marginal block of 4 showing gross error caused by paper fold while printing. Giving also the appearance of "extra wide" stamps and mis perf, this is a most unusual and probably unique item. Very rare.

 1887 SG197 1/2d Vermillion. A mounted mint corner marginal piece showing unusual paper fold. This only affects the perforations and not the printing. Corner was probably folded as sheet was being perforated. Unusual.

Watermark Large Crown, Perf 16. A fine used example of this difficult stamp, struck by a scarce London Inland Office 21D - 3 -7- 7- 3 rarity "G" cancellation.

A good used 4 margin example, tied to piece by a double strike of the rare Whitehaven Maltese Cross.
